The Kansas Department of Health and the Environment released a report citing that 91 of the state’s 105 counties have a shortage of dentists. Other findings reported in The Lawrence Journal-World and News article include that only 25 percent of dentists who graduated from urban high schools practice in rural settings and older dentists tend to practice in less densely populated areas.

Forget Dentures, Dentistry Eyes Stem Cells was an article in the St. Petersburg Times on stem cell research at Nova Southeastern College of Dental Medicine (NSU). Researchers at NSU have begun growing and harvesting stem cells to regenerate teeth.

A September article in The New York Times explores cost-friendly alternatives for the estimated 100 million people without dental insurance in the United States. Visits to dental school clinics were again presented as a way to help offset costs.

Another piece on saving money on professional services, including dental care, hit the mainstream media. The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine was referenced in the report by the CBS Early Show’s consumer reporter Susan Koeppen.

Several California dental schools were mentioned in a Los Angeles Times article on low-cost cancer screenings. According to the article, “A study published in June in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians found that about 650,000 deaths from cancer were avoided or delayed between 1990 and 2005.” Early screenings are partly attributed.
